January: Stalking Awareness Month

Main content start
Text that says: National Stalking Awareness Month January

According to the Stalking Resource Center, over 7.5 million people are stalked each year in the United States. Stalking is often committed by someone the victim knows (contrary to popular belief), and stalking by an intimate partner is the most common and most dangerous type of stalking. Every January is National Stalking Awareness Month (NSAM), a month dedicated to raising the understanding of stalking. This January, we invite our Stanford community to learn more about stalking, name it when it happens, and stop it from occurring.

Stalking intersects with both intimate partner violence and sexual violence. The observance of NSAM is a vital time for us to join efforts to raise awareness and to educate about stalking and how it relates to other forms of violence. As we elevate the issue of stalking throughout the month, let’s also take this opportunity to work towards solutions to prevent stalking and related forms of violence throughout the year and beyond.

"You" Season 2 Premiere Screening

SHARE screened the first episode of "You" Season 2 on January 30, 2020 to analyze and discuss portrayals of stalking in the media during NSAM. "You" is a "psychological thriller" that centers on one man's toxic obsession with his romantic interests. The show has sparked a widespread conversation on dispelling harmful stalking myths and not romanticizing harmful behaviors.
